The State Championship matches are the same date as they have always been for the last fifty some years or so.
The table Matches have completely died the last two times that I tried to hold one nobody even bothered to show up.
People around these parts just don't seem to have any interest in accurate rifle shooting anymore, somewhat astounding to me! I have questioned some about would they like to shoot better? Would you like to make your rifle shoot better? Most respond "shoots good enough for me" it is what it is I guess, sad!

Hello Big John! About the same here in West-Central MO. everything has been pretty quiet. NO match shooting has been going on at Ft. Osage but the club has been open to members to shoot as they wish, we are planning on getting the State Championship Matches going the 11th to the 14th of June. Hopefully get the club back to the new normal whatever that will be!

Doing OK over here on the West side of Missouri. The grocery stores shelves were pretty much cleaned out but are now gaining ground to almost normal. Suppose to be on a "stay home" except for essentials. Gun clubs are both open but no organized activities so have sneaked out and burned some powder, get out and walk for exercise.
Keep safe everybody!

Good to hear that you have made some improvement! I do think that Winter is starting early this year real early! Not a good sign! Maybe we'll have an early Winter and then an early Spring I'm hoping!

The weather guesser says that we didn't get that much only 3 inches? So I'm off about 50% not bad for me! I was really guessing because on the flat over areas there is very little and anywhere it can drift it did big time! Oh-Well we'll wear this Winter out sooner or later I hope! It is suppose to warm up some by the weekend and next week we just might get almost back to normal for a day or two.

Well the roller coaster took another dip early this morning another 6 inches or so of global warming actually it is hard to tell how much snow because of the 30 to 40 mph winds is bowing the stuff into big drifts here and there! Forgot to add about 10 degrees too! Winterfull March weather!

Well the Roller-Coaster ride is still on! Another couple of inches of Global Warming flurries this morning and now a little freezing rain on top of that! Really isn't that bad to walk on I hauled out the trash this morning and it has a nice crunch to it, the one good thing is that it's 32 and suppose to warm up to 37 so maybe not too much ice?

Wow! 20 inches! We only had a few more flurries and that's a plenty! Ft. Osage was OK we had a few small limbs down and a couple of bigger ones but no damage thankfully! There were five people showed up and we fired up the wood stove in the Sign-Up shed and most sat around told lies about how good we used to shoot then Thorp showed up so you know who was the KIng of the BS? The crazy thing was that two new guys drove out and were wanting to join the club! If a couole of guys drove out into that kind of conditions and found the club and asked to join they must be pretty dang serious about joining, things might be looking up for 2019!

18 and 1/4 inches now that is measuring mighty fine! I've got anywhere from 6 to 8 inches depending on where I measure over here on the West side of Missouri or maybe that should be "Misery" at least it is suppose to warm up into the 40's by Tuesday maybe melt off some of this global warming.

How is the accuracy? Do you wipe between patches if so what do you use? We now have about 8 to 12 inches of snow on the ground and it might be while before I can even get into a rifle range? I am driving over to Fort Osage Muzzleloaders gun club today to check out the damage and it is suppose to be a shoot date! It will be interesting to see if anyone shows up? Life in the Midwest!

I don't put a "roll" into the solution I just stuff a strip of patching into a mason jar screw the lid on and shake it for a little while then remove squeeze the excess off and lay out on an old window screen to dry seems to dry a bit faster that way.
Like you I plan to shoot this new dry patching in my Table Match rifle at 50 yards that will soon tell if there is a difference if it shoots as well and does not build up oil in the barrel. That is a problem that I have had with some other oil type lubes namely castor oil it will shoot well for a while but the oil builds up in the bore and then the bore becomes slicker and slicker and even though wiping between shots the accuracy starts to degrade and groups open up. Just need some global warming to come back to my neighbor hood now!
Black Powder Shooting » Patch Lube » 1/09/2019 7:44 AM |
I was wondering what weight of Mobil 1 people were using I used Mobil 1 in 10/40 because that's what I had.I mixed up some 10 parts 91% alcohol and 1 part Mobil 1 and this seems a lot better to me still can get a bit of oil on my fingers when I pull the strip of patching through them and I think that I will try some 15/1 and need to get out and shoot but the weather is going to take a turn for the worse I'm afraid rain, snow, turning back to rain over the next few days.
Don Steel, I use almost exactly the same method that you use and still get splotchy patching (usually on the first roll after that they are OK) I use that roll for offhand practice and don't really notice any difference but they just don't look right and I like everything to be consistent EVERYTHING!

I got to looking around and find I'm proud owner of 2 quarts of a very fine German made 5/30 Full Synthetic motor oil that I have ZERO use for in any of my current vehicles. While I'm perfectly satisfied with the patch lube(s) I'm using now the researcher in me loves trying new ideas...just for the fun of trying new ideas.
I don't have any Hoppe's Number 9 solvent on the shelf so I'll have to do some outside-of-the-rifle testing to see what might give the best results when wiping between shots and for cleaning after shooting....then who knows...I might have to give it a try at the range on my cotton patches.
Well boy Howdy! I guess so! Now you have me thinking I have had great success with "dry patching" using Ballistol and water but there are a couple of problems. First Ballistol and water don't really mix all that well and and tend to separate somewhat. No matter how I mix it the first roll of patching that I soak in the mix always comes out splotchy? The later rolls after that come out more consistent I think, so I use them for serious shooting and the first rolls for offhand practice. And the Ballistol mix seems to dry out over time so I don't make that much up ahead of time. So off to the Mobil ! experiment!
I first tried just rubbing some of the Mobil oil on a strip and patching but had way too much oil after giving it time to soak all the way thought the patching material.. The next try I was trying to find something to mix the Mobil 1 with to apply like the Ballistol and water. I came up with 91% alcohol it mixed very well and after several days no signs of separation so I put in a roll of patching and shook it up and removed and rolled out to let dry and it was very evenly distributed I think but still too much oil I think I used a mix of 6 parts alcohol and one part oil. The next time I'll try a 10/1 mix and of course it'l take a bunch of s

I've been following along with this thread mainly to see how this progresses in the last few years I built a .40 squirrel rifle to be used for bench and Table matches. It has Rice 15/16 barrel 36 inches long I used a back action lock and the stock is a bit on the fat side a little bit of extra wood but I wanted plenty of stock to rest on and hold? Anyway I had to use a piece of aluminum for an under rib to keep the weight under 10 pounds. Then I made another 40 flinter mainly for offhand shooting again walnut full stock but slimmed down it's another 15/16 Rice barrel but I was able to make it 38 inches long and keep it under 10 pounds just barely like 9# 12oz. I would not want a barrel of less that 14/16 for a serious shooter and depending on the wood you might get that out to 40 - 42 inches? 13/16? Seems really thin to me you could get more length = more sight radius but you would have to be very careful how you place it on the bench and how you handle the rifle. You can get more length with a swamped barrel and I think they are great for offhand but as a light bench-squirrel rifle for target shooting? I just don't like all that milled tapered machining going on with target barrel. I might add square bottom rifling that silly round groove bottom rifling is OK for the bang and clang shoot all day never clean guys but serious shooting NOT FOR ME!
This is what works for me your mileage may vary.

I've been following this thread with interest and I like the idea of a "Novice" class the problem we have at my home club is that we have three or four really good marksmen whether offhand or bench or table or whatever. It's almost guaranteed that one of those shooters is going to win the tightest X or the Match X and or the shortest string and clean out the quarter pots. There have been several club members that have ask about the Table Matches and shown a interest but never show up at a match. So maybe if we could have a Novice match and I'm thinking allow a two time try at the Novice Match and giving the shooter a break as no match fees or quarter pots just come out and shoot and try it maybe give a token prize for the tightest X and the short string in the Novice class?
