I think those were a kind of non-optical scope sight. I believe there was a cross hair or blade sight.

Saw that this morning. Soddys are one of my favorite gunmaking schools.

Back to the original question. I wonder if it might be best to leave the barrel polished bright to reduce heating by the sun?

I made the front sight using a brass tube soldered to a sight base. I use a silver round head pin,(small head) soldered so the pin head is centered. I drilled a hole over the pin to let in a little light. I make my sighter target a round solid black circle on a white background, that fits inside the front sight tube with just a slight “halo” of white showing at 60 yards. I make a bright colored dot in the center that is just slightly larger than what the pin head covers at 60 yards. This gives two reference points for the front sight to go with the rear sight notch to insure that everything is aligned.

Many use a full length shader tube, and it wouldn’t matter. I use a shader over the rear sight and a small tube front sight with a hole drilled above the sight pin to make the pin head stand out better. I have a dull, rust browned finish on my barrels.

Glad to hear you are doing ok, John! Not long after I last saw you, I had to get a hip replacement, followed by a quadruple heart bypass. Doing great now. Feel better than I have in years.

Had a great time at the York over the log shoot this year. Was windy but sunny and dry. Thanks to Robin and all who worked hard to pull off the event. Hope to see everyone there next year.

Some shoots want the rifle to be”traditional”. There have been pistol gips on stocks for more than 200 years.

Is the York shoot on as planned? Lots of events being cancelled because of virus fears.

It’s great to hear your eyesight is coming back, John! You were smart to seek another opinion. Doctors are like car mechanics. Good ones are hard to find.

I’ve shot on a log at some shoots. They usually had one that was different heights to suit most of the shooters.

I would find one that was flat on the top and bottom so it wouldn’t roll or move, and also the correct height for you.

Thanks for hosting this match, John. I had a good time, even if too many shots strayed off the X. I’d like to come back again when the weather is cooler and I can stay longer.
Chile and dogs were great!

I don’t know who made the sight. I bought it used off a table. I made the front sight. It has a pin head post.

I’ll post some pictures of the rifle when it looks a little more finished. Right now, it looks like a barrel with a 2x4 bolted on.

Are you going to retire the rifle you used at Indiana state shoot or just use it when the wind is bad?

I already had the parts, so I thought a .40 cal. Percussion would be a good compliment to the .54 flintlock.

I can also load the .40 much hotter than the .54 without all the recoil. Like you mentioned, the .54 will be best in the wind.

I’ll also be using the longer barreled .40 as a lighter chunk gun.

Hi all.

Started building a percussion table rifle. 48" DeHaas barrel. .40 caliber, 1-48 twist. L&R mule ear lock. walnut half stock.

Got to the rough finished stage and took it to the range today to see if it worked, and check the stock fit. I shot about a dozen shots with poor results, then changed to 70 grains 2f and teflon patching with a .400 ball. Next 10 shots were in a quarter sized group, 30 yards. looks like a shooter!

Three things you must remember while target shooting. (1) Align the sights carefully. (2) Squeeze the trigger. (3) Say how did it get over there. http://prwarner.wix.com/mlts-masters
