I was wondering what size groups people are getting that use 40 cal. table rifles.

The shooters in the Fort Osage Club near Kansas City have been shooting consist groups in the mid 2" range.
Some of those shooters are quite dedicated to their shooting and really work at shooting well.
The shoots I had last year, there were 5 of us and me and my buddy from around here took quite a lesson from them!
The three from there shot in the mid to low 2" group with me in the high 3's and my buddy low 4".
Richard told me that the 1" mark had been broken a couple of times in competition but I have not witnessed it, but I believe him! That would be some great shooting!
The average would be high 2" to mid 3" most days.

This thing just doubles up my post sometime. Don't know why … sorry!
Go to shoot results and scroll down to page 3 look for the Fort Osage shoot scores.
1/28/16 2-6-16 4/26/16 On page 4 the shoot of 7/17/15 has some pictures of the match.

Is the question about group size, or total string measure of the targets in a match..???

These are total string measurements of 10 shots.

I glued a rail on my barrel when I was working up loads. I do nor remember the group size but off sand bags and as long as I kept loading pressure close, it would shoot close to a one hole group at 50 yards.

At 30 yds, off a standard table shoot rest my 40 cal. (Rice bbl) will produce a one hole 5 shot group you can almost cover with a dime.
50-55 gns Goex 3f, .395 ball, .018(compressed) patch, 7:1 water/Ballistol ( dried) lube cut at the muzzle.
At 50 yds it opens up to about quarter size. Still one hole, but a little more “ ragged”.

Have you ever tried a string measurement on those 5 shot groups?
Stretch it on out to ten shots and compare with the strings posted.
Looks like you have it figured out!
Keep up the good shootn' !

I shot the table match over at Morehead last Saturday and 11 of my 13 shots were covered by a quarter, one of my sighter shots was completely outside of the group and one of my match shots was partially outside.
My string measure for those 10 shots was 3.229".
I'm shooting a 40 cal 15/16" x 38" Wayne Jenkins barrel, 50 grains of 3F Swiss, .021" cotton army duck patching, .395 round ball, wetting my patches with Mr. Flintlock patch lube and cutting them off of a 2" wide strip of army duck at the barrel.
My best string so far with the rifle and load has been 2.519".

With my 40 cal. Green Mountain Barrel flintlock table rifle my groups hang around 3/4" if their are no fliers.
I have shot some five shot groups in practice that could covered with a Dime but never in a match I measure
my groups too the center of the bullet holes.
Maybe with my 76 year old Diabetic eyes 3/4" groups are what I am able to shoot.
I am using 50 grs. 3f swiss powder .020 patch, Lehigh Valley lube and a .405 ball.
Carl are you coming to Allen's Saturday?
