New .40 caliber Tennessee

I recently finished a .40 Tennessee plain rifle. No buttplate, nosecap, or entry thimble. I used an original barrel with the original sights and lolipop tang. Had the barrel rebored and rifled by Bob Holt. The twist is 1/48 and the grooves are .012". I made the triggers and trigger guard. made the stock from a plank. Also made a horn and pouch to go with it.

I tried .395 and .400 cast balls in the .408" bore. Both worked well and loaded easily with a .017" denim patch. The target is 3 shots with 37 grains 2F.

Re: New .40 caliber Tennessee

Took the rifle to my local club shoot today. We shot 25, 50, and 100 yard offhand targets for the match. I had a hard time seeing the low original sights on the 25 yard range, as it was overcast and rainy this morning. However, I made it up with good scores on the 50 and 100 yard targets that were more in the open. My 63 year old eyes need more light, especially after vitreous detachment in both eyes this past year, and a torn retina in one eye.

I ended up winning by 8 points and  all but one other shooter used percussion rifles. The gun shoots better than I can, so if I do my part, it will make a dandy all around rifle.

Three things you must remember while target shooting. (1) Align the sights carefully. (2) Squeeze the trigger. (3) Say how did it get over there. http://prwarner.wix.com/mlts-masters
